These guys have got to be one of my most favourite birds.
This is a Squatter Pigeon I found at Porcupine Gorge 60km outside of Hughenden. I first thought they were snakes bu to my surprise it was a pair of Squatter Pigeons. Before we got there I was complaining about how much I wanted to see them. God must have heard my prayers as they did not fly away when they were found. They are incredibly tame birds as i got within touching distance from them. I hope all of you get an as great experience as I did. Please feel free to tell your bird moments like mine as I would like to hear them.
Enjoy!

Squatter Pigeons
Gidday QLDBird, nice ones,I posted some pics of these some time back that I took at Nebo. Thanks for sharing.
Where exactly is Porcupine Gorge...I run through Hughenden on my way to the Isa and Century mine on a regular basis.
I have never heard of it so was wondering its exact location.
As you know the country up that is very flat for bloody ages once you go over the top of "White cliffs" national park nth of the Towers.
Cheers.
There is a Lookout and track leading into the gorge on the Porcupine Gorge Lookout Access Road which is off the Kennedy Developmental Road. You should check it out if you have time. It is a beautiful place. Hope It Helps!
Hey QLdbird, how come for one so young you have such an amazing repertoire of bird knowledge!? :)
I have never heard of squatter pigeons let alone seen any.
Do you get out into the bush often?
Cheers

Not as much as I would like Birdie. I take every chance I get.
The first ever real birding adventure i went on was this year. I went to oxley creek common. It was lovely there. I wish I could do it more often.
Awesome pics. I'd love to see some Squatter Pigeons.
Is there two Qldbirds or have you taken over another persons name? I just re read a post where you said you used your son's camera. But I thought you were still at school? as in 12.
It could be old age catching up with me but am I getting confused here?
Don't laugh too loud at me :)

Don't worry, I noticed the exact same thing lol. Love the face patterns on the pigeons!
First of all My dad was using this account but then he gave it to me.
Sorry for the confusion!
No worries at all Qldbird, I figured either I was losing it or there was a logical explanation to it like that one!
My daughter is just starting out using my camera ( much to my concern and worry :)) and she is your age. She is doing well and has a good eye. You have the desire and the interest in your subject matter so the rest will follow don't worry.
What kind of camera are you using at the moment?
Sunshine Coast Queensland
All except for a few were taken using amy mums Panasonic DMC-TZ11 which i find quite a good compact camera. When I get the chance I use my dads Canon Eos 400D with a 75-300 mm lens. You, Birdie, own my dream camera! A Conon Eos 1000D! How I would love to have one!
Nah..... just borrow his :') ..... works for my daughter anyway LOL
It is a very good basic camera at an affordable price.
Is the Panasonic a Lumix? if so they have a great lens on them and do a good job.
Get you Dad to take you to Australia Zoo and let you borrow his to go through the aviary, you will do a good job I am certain. He may need to find some way of occupying himself for the two hours you are going to spend in there though !
Sunshine Coast Queensland
Yeah it is a Lumix.
I'm sure he'll find something to do. The only problem is that I will have to take 2 non supportive siblings with. Once I go I'm sure you'll be the first to see my photos! Do you have a FLickr account?
Yes I do have a Flickr account Qldbird, but everything on there has been posted here I think. I am about to upgrade to a Pro account as Keeping it to 200 shots is proving to be impossible for me, and I hate it when I go looking for something on there and it has been deleted. If you want to add me as a contact you can email me at
and I will be happy to give you the details of that and the blog I am attempting to create. I don't check that email very often but I will remember to if you are going to contact me.
Cheers
birdie
PS Why didn't you post the wren shots that Birdlover stole? they are great. Have you asked your siblings? Surely they wouldn't do something like that ?! ( can you tell I have an only child!????)
Sunshine Coast Queensland
I wasn't going to because I took them a while ago and I've seen so many other Fairy-wren shots on here its quite monotonous.
