I find these things incredibly hard to photograph. I took this one this afternoon, and while it isnt a perfect photo, its the best sparrowhawk photo i have ever taken.
If anybody else has any sparrowhawk photos, please feel free to post them here, i would love to see them.
Gidday birdgirl, that is an exceptional shot you have there.
Your bird is a Black Shouldered Kite.
If you look in Hevs post "Birds from the top end" you will see a Collared Sparrowhawk.
Thanks for sharing.
Lovely shot birdgirl.
If you want to see some more of that kind of bird, check out Birdgirl2009 and her Juv Black shouldered Kite post. they are beautiful shots of the juvenile of this species

Collared Sparrowhawk
:)
Awesome photos myky. Where were they taken?
in my backyard birdgirl - Toowoomba Qld
:)
They are all awesome photos. I am finding birds of prey the most difficult to photograph at the moment. I had a great opportunity today, but alas I left my camera set to monochrome as I had been taking reference shots for illustrations....... the bird turned out as a black shadow against grey cloudy skies!!!!
That's a really beautiful shot of a black shouldered kite birdgirl, where did you capture the shot?
Tassie looking at the shots of the collared sparrowhawk myky has posted I'm wondering if mine were of a Brown goshawk...he looks to have a heavier brow...looks 'meaner'...his legs and claws seem thicker too.
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
this might be a better shot....

My book says "brow-beetled eyes" LOL ... but "meaner" covers it I guess Hev! Yours looks to have the thick feet that's for sure, can't see the tail but the Collared has a squarer one according to Simpson & Day. I am sure Tassie is getting used to our non scientific descriptions by now, after all I did suggest that the Hobby looked like an over-sized budgie :)
