Can anyone identify the species of this bird. The shot was taken near Olinda in eastern victoria; the surroundings were small tree ferns and a low-mid canopy of shrubs under tall eucalypts. The bird was feeding under the bark of a small acacia.
I am reasonably sure I know what it is, but I would like to hear some other suggestions to get some confirmation :)
looks like a brown Thornbill to me.....
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Yep, I'd second that
oops sorry I meant Yellow Thornbill

Large-billed Scrubwren for my money
Did you take this on one of the lyrebird walks Berldo? If you did then this a combination of Mountain Ash forest (Wet Scleropyll) and cool temperate rainforest. In these dense, wet gullies I'll expect the bird to be a large-billed scrubwren- seconding Bourke.
Oxalis is not my friend
hmmm yes I can see what you mean... could be a large billed scrubwren. Do you have any more shots of the bird berldo? particularly of his beak, LBSW have 'donald-duck' type bills flat on top and curved underneath so that would be a good clue.

Thanks for the responses thus far. Below is an image of what I identified as a yellow thornbill (correct me if I am wrong) taken at the Macedon ranges.
In comparison to my mystery bird (another photo below) notice the difference in the length of the beak; hence I would lean towards calling it a Large Billed Scrub Wren
And yes bird nerd you are spot on once again and thank you for the lovely description of the area in which the photo was taken.
