Pacific heron?

I saw some other birds on my trip - what I think is a Pacific heron but the neck is not held in the s-shape, 2 pairs of whistling kites and some water birds

Nice variety there Birdgirl :)

I think I saw a Hobby fly really low over me today, have to consult the bird bible and check out the features.

That one would have to be a White-necked Heron.
Nice Shot.
Wish i could see one!

According to the Reader's Digest Complete book of Australian Birds, the Pacific heron Ardea pacifica is aka the white-necked heron. Good to see we agree - I don't think I have seen (or noticed) one before, so I wasn't sure what it was. It flew right over the car while I was looking at the black-shouldered kites
Birdie my first bird guide The Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds is one I use a lot because it shows what many birds look like from underneath when flying eg BOP, ducks etc. It's a real help when that is the main way you see them. I have lots of bird books now, but that one and the reader's digest one (because it has lots of behavioural info and great photos of young) are my favourites
