Nice in flight shots. Were you up in that hide? I was really excited when I saw that , but there was nothing around the day I went so I just took the swamp instead :)
Beautiful photos, looks like your in flight photos are coming along really well. Also love the photo of the nest! We pass a water feature every monring on the train and it's always packed with Ibises. Our family has nicknamed them "hobo birds", on account of their scrufiness, usually dirty plumage and they're food source tends to be a bin... With the nest I assume they are communal nests? I've heard the ibis have a problem with their young falling out of the nest, I think this shows why.
Thanks everyone.
Hev it looked like 2 giant platform nests in contact and another further back. There are many, many more - there must be 1000s of birds at peak season. I'm wondering if some babies have already hatched - the bird in the front middle looks very small.
Birdie I wasn't in the hide (there was a school group going up when I went past), but near the fence on the other side (between melaleuca swamp and middleton swamp if you still have your map). I was sitting on a bench practicing my tracking. I even got a good photo of a jetstar plane.
Amateur they do nest in colonies. If you go into Darling Harbour you will see them stealing nesting material from the Chinese Gardens and taking it into the tops of the trees near the Exhibition Centre. The young fall out of those trees sometimes - it's a long way down
Unfortunately they are in pest proportions in some areas here. they are a lovely bird to watch fly though. I took some shots this morning but after seeing yours I am glad I didn't bother posting them :)
I would love to go back to the Hunter Wetlands when the egrets come in and nest.
Sure thing, but it will probably be another year before we get down that way again. I think our friends are heading this way over the Summer.
Same goes for you, if you ever come up to the Coast
Thanks bushbirdnerd and Tassie. They fly so fast I'm just about screaming with frustration at my camera because I'm tracking as well as I can but it can't focus quickly enough a lot of the time. I'm going to have to revisit manual focus for quicker birds.
Lovely shots birdgirl, ur excellent at B.I.F pics.
wow crowded is an understatement, how many birds are sharing the ?two? nests in the forground?!
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
