Swallows or Martins?

I took some pictures in much the same location on two different days. I thought they were the same birds. (I have used one as my BIB 'Avatar').

I now think maybe the first ones were Fairy Martins and the second time they were Welcome Swallows. The pictures are a bit dodgy as the were fast and high, apparently catching insects. Can anyone set me straight or do I need to wait 'til I get better pictures?

Hi Roger
Day 2 birds are definitely welcome swallows. We see these guys a lot as they are nesting in our roof...but can never photograph them clearly as they are always flying around too quickly! So well done on capturing such clear shots.

As for your Day 1 birds - we don't recognise them and don't have an id book to hand...so hopefully someone else can help you out.

Day 2 is some welcome swallows as edward said and day 1 is either fairy or tree martins. I'd be leaning towards a tree martin but it's hard to tell.

Thanks Edward and Amateur, ....... so you both think they are different. I will have to go back and try again to capture the Martins. The irony is that I had been trying to get Swallows elsewhere and didn't even realize that I already snapped some, (albeit a bit blurry). Thanks for the opinions, I will try again and post anything I get back on this post. Regards Roger

I don't know if anyone will see this as it's now nearly a month since I asked the question. Anyway I said I would post more pics here if I could so here they are.

I am starting to think that all of my sightings have actually been swallows as you can see from these images, the swallow tail sometimes looks barely forked at all.

LOL Roger,

I've looked and seen them!

I have Welcome swallows every year under the eaves of my house. I go and sit outside in the dusk and they swoop me! Once or twice I have found a baby pushed out of the nest too...very sad. :( They used to get under my car port but I had to destroy their nests as I could not cope with the accumulating poo on my car! I only did this whilst they were building - not after they had settled in! LOL

beautiful shots, thank you or sharing. You must have a very good camera :D

Great shots. I like the first one of the second lot - they look like they are coming straight for you and they are not happy!

I forgot to say Roger..... these are brilliant action shots of a bird that is sooooo hard to catch in the act :)
You appear to have them coming head on ... how were you able to be up that high.... standing on a ladder ??!!! LOL
