Catbird

I got a terrible stiff neck trying to coax this catbird down from the top of the trees and into my garden last night. trying to use flash .... very shifty bird, was curious but wouldn't stay still for a moment!

Yep George..... sure is nothing shy about them at 4.30am I can tell you!!! In the evenings though, they are using the tsk tsk call and are much shier. I got it to come towards me by making kissing sounds (till my mouth got so dry I couldn't make any more!!!!)

Hey, you did the best you possibly could Adrienne. :) A real skulker of a bird. :(

Just had a thought. Set-up a perch in a semi-quiet area and leave some fruit pieces. Soon they get the idea. Though I cannot guarantee any results. :) Worth a try?

Yes I have thought of that, but I would have to hang it as there are a few cats (including my own) that use the top of the fence as a pathway.n Also there is a pair of figbirds that roost in the tree beside this and they would snatch it first probably, but yes Akos, it is definitely worth a try. I can't complain as it is hardly difficult birdwatching to go to the back corner of your garden and hang over a 6ft fence is it? I should just leave a container of mozzie stuff out there and a ladder and I would be set.
One thing I must do is invest in some camo clothes as I must stand out like the proverbial in my white shirts amongst all that greenery :') LOL

I have 2 families of catbirds in my backyard, yesterday we watched mum feeding 2 new chicks.
I have now seen / watched 26 different species of birds, as I live in port macquarie with my backyard backing onto a small creek and coastal rainforest..
last week we had a regent bower bird at our birdbath.. awesome site, right in the middle of town.
I will now start trying to photograph my amazing backyard;

Welcome Gaz.... hthat is so great to meet someone else that shares the joy that catbirds bring :')

They are so neat aren't they? You are very lucky to have babies... I know ours breed but I can't seem to ever get a look at any that are really young. I do hear a raspy hissing sound at dusk that I thought may have been a young one wanting food but am not sure.

I'll look forward to your photos that's for sure
