Sacred Kingfisher

Not an uncommon bird but it's the first time that I have seen one at Edithvale wetlands. This Sacred Kingfisher would not allow me to get any closer than about 30 metres so I had to crop the photo quite a bit.

Lovely shots Wampy :) Kingfishers are such gorgeous birds.

This is a young bird too. The dark markings on the breast and the light outer edgse on the scapulars are indicative of its age. The second image held up very well for a crop.

Nice shots Elle. Why not start a new thread with them? BTW yours is still a Sacred Kingfisher; not a Forest Kf.. :)

Hi Windhover. I've just realised that the book I use for identification shows an inaccurate picture of the sacred kingfisher, which is why I thought I had the forest. It shows the sacred as being mostly green! It's called 'The Field Guide to the Birds of Australia' 2007 edition by Graham Pizzy and Frank Knight. I just looked at the pictures and now I feel kind of silly that I didn't look into more!! lol I think I may have deleted pictures of the 'actual' forest kingfisher a year ago!! Ooops

No biggie Elle. Easy to get confused, the two are very similar, but the Sacred has buff coloring near the lores as well, the Forest does not. I have that guide, though an older version and didn't realize there could be a mistake. No problemos.... :)

Elle you have an impressive shot of a sacred kingfisher. i find them so hard to find. i've only ever seen one at wilson reserve along the yarra river-an excellent spot for birds if you live down that way.
Also wampy great sacred kingfisher shots.

Cheers, Owen.

Nice shot Wampy, the only one we've seen was at Coolart wetlands, but like you couldn't get very close.

If anybody knows exactly where I can find some kingfishers in the Illawarra NSW please let me know. I have been trying to find them for some months now.

Nice photos btw. I am jealous. If I could see one with my eyes it would be at least a start.

Much appreciated.
Alex
