Bell miner

Easter hols have been good to me - I've been able to go out birding every day. Back to reality on Wednesday ...
Today's mission was to get a better photo of a bell miner. I know place where there are lots in a small area. I had the dreaded white sky and the birds were mostly at the tops of the trees, but I kept clicking away. I saw them agressively attacking some rainbow lorikeets in a flowering gum - now that takes courage. They wouldn't stop. I noticed that they liked the gum blossom themselves. After a while a big flock of currawongs (about 15-20) came into their territory. The bell miners didn't want them there but were very cautious - one bell miner would fly at one currawong once, then fly to a safe spot - very different to the co-operative repeated bombing of the rainbow lorikeets

Beautiful shots Birdgirl, do you know I have never seen one?
There is a little corridor of bush at Beresfield where I used to wind down the window as I went past so I could listen to them.
Thx for sharing.

Great shots Birdgirl... and interesting behaviour. Looks like that exposure is so much better with that set up too. Like Tassie, I have never seen one of these.

excellent shots birdgirl.took me ages and ages to get a good bell miner shot and even then it wasn't as good as yours.
bell miners like the insects in the trees as well don't they?
I love their yellow bill and legs with their red eyes.

Cheers, Owen.

Thanks. They are hard to get because they stay high.
Tassie I know where you mean. I hear them on both sides of the highway, on the Maitland side of the new overpass at Beresfield

Yes Birdgirl you pretty much have the area, its in between where you go under the overpass down to the big roundabout where you either turn right for Cessnock or go straight through onto the start of the freeway heading down to Sydney.
In between those two spots there is an old nursery supply place.....just there.
