Thanks all, sometimes a few shots come off and you get the above result. Ed, so am I, an old Wolsely, but hey, the years of experience can come in handy when it xomes to patience waiting for bird-watching.

I have a 1949 Riley so I know about patience especially with the original reversed polarity electrics .I love the idea that our patience especially with British cars prepares you for bird watching !
Now if I can get a shot of the Restless Flycatcher doing the rounds of our side mirrors ,we can compare .He is at it all day long !
If I remember rightly and I may not, hand out and waved in a circular motion was the signel for 'I intend to slow and manuover too or turn too the left'. Hand out and waved up and down 'I intend to slow' and hand out and held upright (90º at the elbow) 'I intend to stop'.To signel a left turn to somebody facing you your right arm was held diagonally across chest (I think). Don't try this today as I suspect very few will know what you are up to, and in Queensland it is an offence to have any part of the body outside the car.
Its an offence in NSW too to have any part of your body outside the window. I know because I have been booked for "limb protrusion" when I was in my 20s. That cop just didnt like young kids in hotted up cars. And no we werent doing anything wrong but its the only thing he could write a ticket to us for.
And those hand turn signals are just unbelievable. "No officer, I was checking the time and the other guy must have thought I am stopping" :)
I think NZ was different.. I think the left hand turn was done up in the windscreen with the back of your hand to the windscreen!!! and facing left. I also think you had to precede this with the stop signal given above to warn those behind that you were slowing to turn. How sad am I that I can remember this stuff too!!!!!
unfortunatly I am......great shot.

you did turn signals by hand in a car? What if you had to turn left? I imagine you would have to have pretty long arms. Great shot btw.
