normally, i get the good shot when i start walking back to the car, calling it a day and then suddenly it will make a fly-by like saying 'see ya' lol

That has happened to me too - once I packed the camera away 3 times - each time I did, the whistling kite reappeared, flying low and was too far away by the time I got the camera out again

I had the same experience with BOPs yesterday ..... just when I was under tree cover I looked up and saw a brahminy low soaring over head...with the winds blowing away from me he didn't even have to move a wing and I was running but still couldn't catch it LOL
Just after that the Osprey appeared doing a similar thing, so off I went just in time to see him swoop and fly off with his fish!!!
As soon as I moved up the other end of the spit the Osprey family and the Brahminy decided to have a tussle over hunting territory and of course I was too far away to do anything but curse and watch !!!! Could have done with your 600 then aa :')
