My neighbours yesterday cut down a number of beautiful native trees in their yard, some of which hung over my yard which i enjoyed due to the birds that were attracted to the trees.
The most significant being a rather large wattle tree that was virtually home to a resident wattle bird.
I am furious. Not only would this wattle bird come back and see its home gone, all other birds which used these trees will no longer visit. As i speak now they are loading these trees on to a trailer - what a waste.
Why are humans so thoughtless?
Because we do what serves us best I suppose, regardless of what else gets damaged. That is a huge waste though, and a native tree and a bird home... Do you know why they cut them down?
Couldn't agree more. I call my next door neighbor Buffy the Tree Slayer for that very reason. He's no friend of fauna either and has taken to popping balloons to scare away the corellas I feed.
Tomage I dont understand why they cut it down. They are renovating the house but this tree was far from the house right in the back corner of the house behind a shed.
They left a lemon tree next to it standing. The wattle birds arent attracted to that one...
Sadly the evening this occured I saw 2 wattle birds sitting on the fence right where the tree used to be, no doubt wondering where their home had gone. How sad :(
Hi South west Sydney, Is it possible for you to grow a new wattle tree in your yard? do you have enough room? Wattle trees are fast growing and within a seasone or two you can have a 4 metre tree. Mybe some other smaller natives if you don't have the room then you can enjoy the birds in your yard.
I'm sorry to hear that, southwestSydney.
Any chance you could report them to council?
In my area (inner west), trees over 4m need a permit for pruning, let alone removing.
Although the deed is done, a visit from a ranger, and possibly a fine, might educate them for "next time"!
It's hard to believe people are so insensitive to bird habitat. But sadly evident that they are!

amen to that
all some people care about is themselves
it make me sick.
thanks
'tree-orists'...a very controlling group...both my neighbours like to cut down any overhanging branches...often in great quantities...the only consolation was the arrival of my first eastern spinebill...otherwise my heart bleeds like sap...kpbl
Renovating -schmenovating- my foot. Why is that trees cut down either privately OR publicly are NEVER replaced with like for like. Indeed trees are usually replaced with concrete et al. Bah humbug!
The sad reality is if you live in a house, then trees have been cut down to make it and trees have been cut down to make way for it. We are all guilty to some extent. However as someone suggested, there's nothing stopping us planting replacement natives if there's room.
I guess we all use some space & some resources on Earth. All organisms do. Our species seems to have the propensity to use more space & resources than any other species & the more advanced our technology the more space & resources we are able to use. We also have the propensity to bring this back into balance so that the whole system can be sustained. So far, we're not very good at using that propensity, perhaps because we believe that our species is superior to any other species rather than seeing our species as one among many.
I was going to ask the same thing. Not knowing what the backyard is like, it's hard to know, but I think I'd be growing trees on the perimeter inside my fence line to try and stop this type of thing happening.

This makes me furious as well so I feel your pain. My neighbour has done the same thing over the years, thoughtlessly destroying decades old trees for no reason at all. These people are absolutely out of touch with nature.
To try and make up for it I've planted many native trees on my side and yes, when they grow they are going to hang over his fence. Hope he enjoys it!
