I have a regularly used outdoor bird feeder, and have been feeding local Rosellas, cockatoos and King Parrots for the past three years. Today was the first time a bird died on my property as a result of flying into one of the large windows at the rear of my home. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? The curtains were half drawn when this happened too, but the interior room was dark, and might have appeared like a passageway. The bird that died was a mature Crimson Rosella.
Thanks Kim. I was so enjoying looking out of this window, as I had recently removed lace curtains which were obstructing my view of the glorious back garden. I have put some old CD's on the window ledge to scare the birds away, and realize that it's mainly during the evening feeding times that the back garden in reflected in the window giving a false sense of depth. I am closing the curtains tonight to prevent that. I may also get Christmas tinsel to hang outside the window too.

I know someone that has hung an ornamental wind thing outside in front of the window for this purpose. Have seen a few strange objects hanging in other properties, these would have the same effect. It doesn't block the view and she reckons it works.
Fantail,
Thanks so much for this suggestion. It won't be easy for me to hang such in front of the window on this rental property, but I will keep it in mind for when I move into my own home, which should be in about a year.

My own windows I slso have Flywire over yo protect netting as well as birds
All the best
I really appreciate the different answers I have been receiving. What I actually did so far, is stopped feeding the birds every single day. It was a bit noisy recently anyway, with all the young birds crying for food. Then I leaned several old CD's against the window ledge, which I had been using in my fruit trees to keep the birds away.
So far, not a single bird has hit the window. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
