I am getting a new camera! An Olympus E-620 DSLR with twin lens kit. I can hardly describe how excited I am about this, I have wanted a DSLR for so very long and have never been able to justify the huge cost. Finally found one in a just manageable price range so it will be my Xmas/birthday present from my husband. Look forward to lots of bird photos as I experiment with my new toy!

Good on you both. I got mine a couple of months ago after about 15 years with an SLR and managed one for my wife(thank got for 2 years interest free). A few weeks ago. Best thing we did for years. m looking forward to your shots Tiffany.

Update!
The camera did arrive and I have had abit of a play with it. Learning alot as I go. I have been reading lots of tutorials on the basics... aperture, shutter, ISO. Things I used to know in high school but have forgotten over time and thanks to digital point and shoot cameras with autofocus.
I think I finally have a grasp on shutter/aperture and their relationship with light and camera sensors :) One of the tutorials I read spoke of understanding your medium as an artist... painters need to understand how their paint works, photographers need to understand light, for it is light that they "paint" with. So now I am trying to be more conscious of my lighting, positioning my subject and creating interest with focus and framing.
I have a rather decent tripod that I bought for use with my video camera but I don't see myself lugging it about... does anyone have experience with the monopod types, are they worth the dollars or should I just learn to use my tripod?
I want to invest in a remote for my camera as well but part of me is concerned that using the LCD screen for viewfinding will be alot harder than I first imagined.
I have to confess it is a wonderful thing to not have the cost of developing and printing that goes with film. I did used to love doing D&P in school, we had a darkroom that we were able to do our own black and white prints in. Learning to use my camera is much more viable now that I can just view my photos on a computer and decide if I have something print-worthy!

I bought the Olympus E520 a couple of months ago, and am still very much in the learning curve.
The tutorials are great, and I am finding there is just so much that the camera offers and a lot to master.
