I saw this tree today, at least 15-20 m high. The leaves look like a Grevillea, there were lots of Wattle birds in it. Can someone tell me what it's called? I want one in my garden. Thanks, M-L

one more photo, here you can see, how the flowers open up like a Grevillea, don't think it's a Banksia.

Hi Mary-Louise,
You're dead right with the Grevillea suggestion - it's a Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta), one of the larger of the Grevilleas.

I like silky oaks too, we have two in our garden but had to remove the third one, too big and it was shading the clothes line and vegie garden. The birds love them (specially the lorikeets and blue-eyed honeyeaters and wattlebirds) but I have to say when we are really short of rain it sheds leaves as if it's deciduous. In full flower they are great. Slow to get any real height, but after a few years they shoot up.

Thanks guys, I will buy two on the weekend! M-L

Just put them away from buildings - my neighbours tree almost demolished my shed. Wonderful trees otherwise.
