Looks like some sort of stick insect
I had one 30cm long on my car the other day
Looks like a "Spur-legged Stick Insect" or other closely related creature.

Thanks for that link Denis, what a great site, I often turn to photgraphing the insects (normally dragonflys) when the birds are few and far between.
