Hi
I am interested in finding out the IDs of these 2 birds. The one on the left was photographed on a city cat pier in Brisbane and the other in Tin Can Bay.
I hope I can get the photo to work!

Beautiful shots there Jan van, your shot on the wood is a Rufous Night Heron and your shot on the concrete is a little back cormorant

I love taking photos and the birds were obliging!
I especially love my sea gull photo which was taken with an ordinary digital camera but captured some great detail. I havent edited it at all.
I have one more bird photo that I think is a little tern - can you confirm this please? It was taken at Ballina. Not great quality though so I hope we can ID it.

Hi Jan, I must admit I am struggling a bit with the Tern, I am fairy sure that it is an immature bird, hence the brown on the wings but I can't see enough detail to ID it, dont worry though, someone on here will for sure

The photos arent great. But I have uploaded all 4 photos (see below). The birds were close in size to the sea gulls. I think they had yellow beaks?? But I wouldnt have said they were "little".

Gidday Jan, I am going to go with you and say Little Tern, however there is another one that I cant rue out yet and that is the Roseate Tern, both have relatively the same distrubution, both have yellow beaks and both have similiar head markings
Your Tern is a juvenile Crested Tern. The juveniles have a slightly smaller bill than the adults, which is also slightly greenish in colour, which you can see in one of the images.
Thankyou. Are the little terns actually "little"? I am just curious.
Comparitively speaking, yes they are little when compared with other Terns.
This image I took about 3 weeks ago. The larger bird is a Crested Tern, what your bird will look like soon enough. The smaller bird is a little Tern in breeding plumage.
The birds are quite close to each other despite what it looks like in this photo.

Thanks Gelmir, I was hoping one of you guys would help out,having grown up in the bush I am still not great on seabird ID's.

I'll have to try and remember to send you the image I took of a Goshawk taking a Swampie chick about 2 weeks ago! You'ld have loved that one. Also the Peregrines are active at the moment too. Great opportunity to get some nice up close photos in the late arvo.
When are you going to post some mate? It is way too far for me to travel at the moment. Must check the two local sites for the Peregrines nesting. One at Glenbrook and the other at Yellow Rock.
I'll try and get down there this week, but with seeing a Sooty Tern last Friday and all the Shorebirds moving through I just can't find the time to do it! ;)
BTW I saw a Common Greenshank on the other side of Sydney last Saturday! :)
