Hi Anzacspirit,

Welcome to the forum. I believe your bird is a Little Pied Cormorant. Lovely bird.

Regards,
Andy.

thanks andy that is what i thought it may be but was put off by the compact size and yellow beak. but seeing the bird stretch its wings it does sseem that it may be as you said. thanks again

You're welcome. Little Pied Cormorants do have yellow beaks so that is something to look for when you're trying to identify one. But yeah, in the first photo the bird looks a bit "squashed" which may have put you off a bit.

Did you see any other birds there?

Andy.

quite a few today, saw a breeding pair of black swans with about 8 babies in tow, yellow billed spoonbill, purple swamp hen, maned wood duck, clamorous reedwarbler, australian magpie, australian magpie lark, crow/raven and probably the nicest find was a male splendid fairy wren its colour was an outstanding cobalt blue but moved to quick for me to get a photo
