Looks like a nankeen kestrel to me. If not then maybe a brown falcon light morph.

Hmmm, does look like a brown goshawk. Very strong chest markings.

As we speak, I'm looking at Morcombe's juvenile collared sparrowhawk with its striations on the throat, bars on the chest & belly, grey-brown upper parts & notched tail. Could your photo be, in fact, of a juvenile collared sparrowhawk, meje2460?

thanks everyone, i'm going with a juvenile brown goshawk, it is hard to tell. i live on the northern rivers and the pic was taken at Jeresulem Creek
