We live in North Queensland and last night heard what I think is a new bird call we'd not heard before.
It sounded like machine gun fire and went for about 10 seconds, stopped and resumed a couple of minutes later.
I listened out for it in the section that has bird sounds on this site but it wasn't there.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
We searched for it with a torch but had no luck as it was in the top of a gum tree - somewhere.
Thanks and cheers
Barb
are you saying this was after dark Psycoco?
Sunshine Coast Queensland
Maybe see if you can record the call, there are many knowledgeable people here who will be able to help. I'm from Victoria and not good at id but I thought of the rifle bird [link=http://birdsinbackyards.net/species/Ptiloris-paradiseus]riflebird[/link]. I don't know if that is of any use.

That sort of call could also be a frog.
In Queensland, how high does a frog get up in the top of a gum tree? Here in Victoria they don't, or do they?

I guess that's why they're called tree frogs.
I didn't say it was a frog, just it might be.
Thanks for responses guys.
The particular bird is not around tonight. So I guess it's not territorial.
Definitely a bird calling from the top of a tall gum tree and at night time.
I'm pretty sure it's not a rifle bird.
If it turns up again I shall go outside with the trusty iPhone and record it. Didn't think of that yesterday.
