what kind of bird has a low whoop whoop call

while sitting in a pop-up blind last weekend waiting for the right bird pic, I heard a "whoop, whoop.....whoop,whoop, ump" call of a bird. This was in east Texas and a call I've never heard before. It wasn't a loud call, but rather low. Hoping someone could help me identify.

I'm not very good at bird calls, where is Texas? Is it the one East of Moree? Could the bird be a Night Heron or similar bird? they do have a deep repetitive call I think. Were you near water?

Same question,"east Texas" where? If it's anywhere here in Australia, I think it could be a "Bronzewing". (they go Moo Moo! Do not respond to the Moo, as this is an inside joke, and I take full responsibility)M-L

It sounds like it could be a Pheasant Coucal. They have a rather long low "whoop whoop whoop" call.
There's an MP3 call on the following page:

Of course, my response assumes you are in Texas, Qld, Australia rather than the US Texas. I'm afraid most of us on this site really only know about Australian birds, as that is the focus of this site.

As it was a night call, my first thoughts are Tawny Frogmouth. Just like Tim's response there is an playable .mp3 file on the following page which may help id the bird.

Hmmm, I read "right bird" to be "night bird" however I have hear the TF call during the day.

Ah well, if (when) you do visit, be sure to come to Queensland, it's the best weather (except for when we have floods) and the very nicest people. Good luck with your bird.
