Hi,
Saw this bird while out walking this morning. I thought it was a white-browed scrub wren but when I looked in my books they have a yellow eye. From what you can see in the pics the eye appears black. Closest thing I could find was a chestnut-rumped hylacola.
The pictures aren't very good, we were playing hide and seek, the bird won.

You really need to include more data, where, when, habitat behaviour etc. Those pics aren't very good but with more info you may bet some suggestions.
Fair enough. Where: Medowie State Forest Port Stephens, Habitat: probably best described as wet sclerophyll, Behaviour: It was feeding low down in the undergrowth, running along branches and pecking under leaves, I didn't here it make any call. When: about 9:30am.

My best guess would be a female golden whistler.
Did it look like this?A female golden whistler?
Or more like this? A white-browed scrub wren?

I think, the scrub wren has a more pointy beak than the golden whistler female? And you are right, the scrub wren does have a yellow ring around the eye. Hope that helps a bit? M-L

It had a definite white brow, I've looked at a lot of pics of female golden whistlers and can't find any with that feature. It didn't seem to have the mottling of a chestnut-rumped hylacola from the pictures I've seen of them but was just reading that females have less mottling on them.
I'll go the same way on my walk today and hopefully get a better look at it (wishful thinking).
The hylacola is supposed to keep its tail mostly cocked, also known as heathwren, also has markings at the tip of the tail. Also a very rich song. You would have a better idea since you saw it.
