Hi all,
We live in Maleny, hinterland Sunshine Coast Qld - a lot of eucalypt and rainforest. Haven't seen the bird but the call sounds like 'escalating anxiety'!
I'm guessing migratory bird as it only started 2mths ago. It repeats 3-4 times, kind of trill like, and escalates in intensity and urgency. Any ideas?
Cheers
Kim
Hi Kim, I don't live anywhere near you, but have you listened to some of the sound tracks on the BIBY web? I would listen to the Wattlebirds, Noisy Friarbird or Common Koel. But wait for the locals to answer. M-L

G'day Kimh. I would say a Koel for sure. This is not the only NOISE they make.Ray
Thanks so much! Had a big google search after you both pointed me in the right direction! Didn't realise the number of different calls the female Koel makes. Pretty sure you've nailed it! Thanks again!
G'day Kimh. I would like to change my mind on this one. I now think it is a Brush Cuckoo. According to Simpson and Day's "Birds of Australia 5.0" CD and my own observations, the sound track of this bird on this site is of the wrong bird, or at least a different song sung by the same bird. I hope this helps. Ray

My first thought immediately was the Brush Cuckoo.
Hi kim,
Good to hear you've identified the birds to your satisfaction.
.
I'd tend to go with the Koel simply cause it's a more commonly noticed bird in the area. My folks live just near there and have plenty of Koels around. The other slightly similar birds that I've seen/heard around their place lately are the Channel-billed cuckoo, which mum describes as sounding like a 'crazed kookaburra' and the spangled Drongo.
