came across this forum while surfing the net because its too hot and windy to go out.
I do visit two nation parks close to me and recently discovered a hide about 40Ks away at a small lake which is at the moment completly dry. If we ever get rain again i will be going back there.

normaly dont mind when its around 30, my weather gadget says its 26 now and the forcast for tomorrow is 29.
might take the camera for a run up the coast.

Hi and welcom from one oldpom to another, been here since '71 !! Great picture on your site, a few mis-named/identified.Can help with some of these if you want, would like to ask where the 'possible bar shouldered dove picture was taken, not sure it is, the bill looks like a fruit dove (white-headed or wompoo) but it does not look like them either??

G'Day Ed,Thanks for the welcome. first off bird IDs, i went thro various birdbooks i have plus had help from a friend in the next town who is a bird enthusiast.
Some i didn't have named and forum members on other forums helped some i googled and some i asked park rangers.
I'm happy to rename any if you are sure.
The bar shouldered dove was photographed in Karunda FNQ.
There was a place there in the markets where i got quite a few of the photographs shown and that was about the closest i could come to, hence the ???marks.Could it be an immature bird
hence the different colouring.
any other members got any thoughts/ideas.

the bill looks like either a white-headed
or wompoo.
I think it could be an imm. white-headed pigeon.
Could the kestrel be a first year spotted harrier?

As discussed above a few (suggested) corrections. Your excellent photo of a 'Little Kingfisher' is in fact a Forest Kingfisher. Al is correct about the 'Kestral' it is certainly a Harrier.One of the Caspian tern pictures should say Crested Terns.Hope that helps.

Your Possible Bar-shouldered Dove does not look right for that species (the BS Dove has a longer tail).
To me it looks like "Fruit Dove", but I am not sure which.
The Emerald Fruit Dove ought have green wings. But the shape is right.

From the inconsistent beak colour, and the flecked plumage, it is most liklely a juvenile bird. That makes it harder to ID positively.
Was the bird a wild bird? If not it is possible it is a hybrid or not even an Australian bird.

It always helps if you can tell us where photos were taken, as "distribution" is critical to correctly ID-ing species.
From your image gallery, you have travelled widely. Lucky you.

The pair of Frog Mouth look like Papuan F.M.

Denis, The photograph was taken in an aviary in Karunda far North Queensland.I'm pretty sure they were all natives.
Al, the frogmouth, you may well be right we travelled through Mosman to the Daintree river which is where i took the photograph, according to my copy of The Birds of Australia by Ken Simpson and Nicolas Day that would be just about at the extreme end of their range.
