Hi from Glenburn Victoria

Hi everyone, I'm new to this but love watching & listening to birds of all kinds. I have a beautiful native bush backyard and many visitors of the bird kind. Hope you will help me with any questions & IDs i have.

Hello Glenburngirl, always nice to have new people on the forum to talk to and exchange views with. I live in Kingston just south of Brisbane, so not neighbours so to speak, but everyone on this forum is friendly and happy to help with IDs and questions. Welcome!

Thanks Meave, nice to be welcomed! Have been reading the forum on & off for some time so finally decided to join. Sometimes you just need a bit of help from people that know more than I do.

Welcome from me too, Glenburngirl. Great to hear you have a native bush backyard. Great for saving water, time & energy as well as attracting wildlife. Is it a garden you planted yourself or do you have remnant bushland?

Hi all, thanks for your welcoming words. We are lucky enough to have a 15 acre backyard which would be classed as remnant forrest/bushland. Apart from heaps of bird visitors, we have a very healthy frog population, wombats, echidnas, possums & snakes. The only planting we have undertaken is around the dam with native plants so as to attract & give the little birds somewhere to hide near the water.

Yes, Glenburn,up the Melba Hwy, is beautiful. Lots of open spaces, but also dense bush!( During the fire season, when I'm listening to the CFA scanner, my ears prick up, when I hear the Glenburn Brigade turn out! )
Have you lived in that area for some time? Or have you just moved to this lovely place, GlenburnGirl? M-L

Yes Araminta, you're right, we are in the more dense bush area of Glenburn. We have been here 3 years now. We had been looking for ages, when we found this place it was 'This is it', loved it from the moment we got out of the car. Do you know the area well?

Yes, we have friends that lived in Dixons Creek, we almost bought a house in the Castella area,(that burned down), and my son's girlfriend lives near Whittlesea. How did you go, when the fires came through? We live on the other side of Bunyip State Park, outside of Gembrook, those fires came close, but this time we were spared. Hoping for a quiet fire season this year !! M-L

Also hoping for a quiet season this year. We also were spared, how I'll never know. We were in Yea for a week, not able to get home. Not knowing if we had a home to go back to was the hardest and most anxious time ever. We also looked in Castella as you did (that burned down), also Kinglake & Kinglake West were all burnt out. I feel very fortunate to have what we are still left with, some friends were not so lucky. If it wasn't for the pipeline workers here with their machinery & creating fire breaks it would surely have been a very different outcome. Will give you a bit more background about our property as it is an interesting link to the bird life observed here over the years. Will post a bit later!

Hi Araminta, this is the info I suggested earlier.

"About a week and a half ago there was a programme on a 30 year project of monitoring the return of birdlife to a property (perhaps in Victoria? Perhaps involving someone called Alan....?). If anyone saw this program and has any more details, could you contact me direct as I would like to follow this up. It was on Gardening Australia. Although I did not see the program I am sure that it referred to Alan Reid who has been revegetating his family property and banding bush birds at Glenburn, which in the central Victorian ranges something like 80 - 100 km NE of Melbourne. Alan occasionally opens the property to environmental groups to view his work. He is the president of the Gould League of Victoria.
The person featured was Alan Reid of Glenburn, ~ 60 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Alan is president of the Gould League. The family property has been managed in a bird friendly manner with the establishment of extensive corridors of vegetation. Alan has been
monitoring these for years including a systematic bird-banding study of 30 years duration. The farm is very different from "Lanark" featured in wingspan as it adjoins existing forest on the hills. The birds, therefore, have an opportunity to recolonise from nearby forest. I was out there in December as Alan had a pair of Regent Honeyeaters on the property. While there I found their nest, containing nestlings near fledging, and colour-banded the adults."

This an excerpt taken from Birding Aus. There is also more info available on the net.

He is also author & co-author of books on birds in Victoria. A great legacy to have taken over as far as the property goes!

Most interesting, Glenburngirl. It always does my soul a power of good to hear about the ecological restoration efforts of others. It's a big advantage to have a large area of natural bushland from which birds & other wildlife can colonise the revegetated areas. I don't have that luxury where I live as the area was like a moonscape when we arrived here. Nevertheless, we've been very pleased that many local people are doing what we're doing so that extensive corridors are being developed.
