Hey, newly interested in birds.
Basically started when I heard a terrifyingly bloodcurdling call one VERY early morning, and the next day ID'd it as a Channel Billed Cuckoo. That made me want to see one, so every morning I'd get outside and try to see one. I'd see Forest Kingfishers flying around the bushland that my garden backed onto, and eventually saw some cuckoos fly over being chased by crows. In the time it took me to spot a cuckoo, I'd seen plenty of birdlife and got interested in birdwatching.
The cuckoo call still sends shivers up my spine though, and I cant sleep through it. Amazing birds, just wish they'd shut up lol

Welcome, BlueKingfisher. With bushland at your doorstep you'll no doubt have lots of exciting things to report.
Unfortunately, the cuckoos have decided to roost in the bush behind our house. They previously used to just fly over, but now we hear their calls all day AND night. That has resulted in my sleep pattern crumbling to peices. I've been woken up at 3am every morning for the past 4 nights. Its almost enough to make me want to move house ASAP.
They leave in February, right?
What healthy habitat you must have, BlueKingfisher - at least for the channel-billed cuckoos. Have you tried ear plugs &/or getting to bed early?

Tamborine Aviaries refers to my hobby, breeding birds, aka aviculture. I have been keeping and breeding various native and exotic parrots for over forty years, and I'm proud of my experience and knowledge of the species I've kept. I usually make some reference to Tamborine Aviaries on the net to identify myself from other 'Lyles'. That is, there are other Lyle Holmeses but to my knowledge no other Tamborine Aviaries in operation.
However if I am in breach of some rule the forum owners are free to cancel my registration as it was not my intention to arouse an 'objection' on my very first post.

They really do make a strange sound. Towards the end of the dry season, and the end of my time working in the Kimberley I began hearing them and too ran out trying to see them. The most I ever saw was one fly over.
As for blood-curdling, I think the Bush Stone-Curlew takes the cake on that one!
