Hi Araminta
Sorry I didn't reply in the other thread about where I have been. I have been here just been busy with lots of other stuff and putting up with the conditions and mess from the torrential rain we have had. We are fine where I live and apart from a harrowing drive to work the last week everything gis cool. Managed to get out for a couple of walks in the weekend and the birdies were very happy up here. Sat in the forest surrounded by variegated fairy wrens and thornbills, golden whistlers, scrubwrens and many more. They were out in force and celebrating the arrival of the sunshine and the fact that they were dry again!
Re the SX30 IS from what I have read it is an exceptional camera feature wise. It is a fully functioned "superzoom" with video capability and would be ideal for you to use as an all round camera. The image stabilising and extra long zoom will be awesome for getting bird shots.
Let me know how you go with getting it anyway
Glad I can make you laugh Marie-Louise.... my work placement this month has given me real insight into the need for laughter and good times while you can! I absolutely love working with dementia sufferers.... something about living in the moment... their moment .... is very appealing. I am going to miss it next week .
Back to study and a few more assignments to finish!!!
Hey there Birdie im going to be rude and interupt your conversation with Araminta. Some of my clients are dementia sufferers and like you said living in their moment is awesome. Its also very sad. I used to have one client (Before he went to nursing home) who would refuse to go the toilet so i used to get him to dance with me. He danced and sang beautifully (he was 88 and sang in polish and english)so up the hallway we would go dancing. The smile on his face was well worth the effort. Hope your enjoying your studying and getting round to the assignments.
Not rude at all Cathshane... we are just babbling on anyway!!!
I totally know what you mean about the moment thing... there was a beautiful moment last week when a 100 year old client sat down at the grand piano ( a bequest to the lodge) and started to play... I have been waiting for ages for that moment to come. She was awesome and as fast as it came.... it went... though she did give a gracious encore at the urging of residents and staff who had been drawn close to listen. She used to be a concert pianist I am told and taught piano locally for many years. If you ask her an hour later though, she will tell you that she cant play any more. Truly a beautiful individual and it was a privilege to look after her and listen to her. :')
Oh... and there were many "moments" during my placement. I was so sad to leave yesterday and am hoping to go back there to work eventually. Unfortunately I have been offered a job elsewhere but still in the medical side of things so I will finish my course and train in that position at the same time.
If I had known that the caring professions could be so rewarding I would have left sales years ago that is for sure.
I can tell a little (sad) story. Some years ago I had a large operation done in a jewish Hospital, and while I was still hocked up to several drips, this skinny, little old man, very quietly came into my room, and slipped into my bed. He didn't say anything. I just watched him until a nurse came to get him. When she touched his arm, he screamed and screamed, he thought he was taken away to a concentration camp. He kept coming back again and again. He never said anything, he hardly moved. I always waited for some time, before I called the nurses. It was one experience, that is still in my mind, and I won't forget.
Don't get me wrong, birdie, I enjoyed the little old man, I could cope with him! (I used to work in a Rehab Centre with recovering addicts, as occupational therapist, doing pottery and painting) I've seen it all!
You would be such a great OT and an even better DT in Aged Care ..... we had a Swiss/French lady doing DT at the place I was at and she was just wonderful. I would like to go as a volunteer and help if I don't end up working there. Time may be the problem but she did say that if I wanted to go in on the weekends it would be a great thing. I am in the middle of doing my dementia assignment and it is so much easier now that I have been immersed in the situation for a few weeks. My mother has it so we are just starting out on the journey.
birdie, I would love to do that, if I could turn back time, and get a few years back. But these days I work with my husband, when needed, binding books. That way we don't have to employ people,it's just us,and our daughter and son part-time. Easier that way to earn a living. I do miss the interaction with people, working with my husband sometimes gets on my nerves! The kids, that's fine, they are great, they only work here 2 days a week. My son is an Artist,(painting, and mosaics), my daughter a vet-nurse. (and, I'm not that young anymore...:-(

We all work well together, I only do mornings, but sometimes I miss the interaction with people. O yes, I would like to turn back time, just 10 years, that's not to much to ask for?
Firstly Marie Louise you are not old, how funny you are. One of our carers who works with us is 65. And can you believe has never had a day off in 20 years dont know how she does it.
I know what you mean Adrienne about how rewarding it can be i worked in sales and did factory work for most of my working life. Got made redundant, my husband left, so i decided i needed a whole new life. Lucky for me a trainership came up for one of the local councils. Mind you it was bloody hard getting in but thank god out of the 200 hundred or so people who went for it i was on of 20 to be picked. I dont work in a nursing home we go to their houses to help them stay at home as long as possible.A funny story: was showering a lady four times a week (she had dementia and lived with her son)Wednesday comes around and we are having a chat, i thought it was just made up. She was telling me how she got picked by the local police, a garbo had called them as she was wondering around the streets rather confused. Her son hadnt realised she had got out of the house. So she is telling me how sexy they were and as you do i just went along with it thinking it was make believe. I finish the job and get her son to sign my sheet and he them tells me its all true. She even asked them to put the sirens on for her which they did. You never know with some clients whether is make believe or not. Sad though come the end of the week and she couldnt remember it. At least for a couple of days she was happy.
Hi Cath, thanks for the very nice comments, I do remember what I said!), unfortunately I can't read it myself, for whatever reason it didn't post on my computer. But I wasn't scared of the little old man. He was only in his pyjamas! LOL What could he have done.......:-)
Holly, help!! I wrote to "la folie" again, but I cant see it getting posted there. Other people must be getting it, because they answer to what I said. How do you explain that? It can't be my computer, as I have posted other things. Hope you haven't banned me from "la folie"?
Cathshane.... I have had a few similar experiences lately with men telling me all about their pasts and how big a job they had with hundreds of staff etc..... I thought they were away with the fairies but then their spouses came in and told me it was all true..... all that is except for the part where one guy told me that his next position was running the place where he was now as another project!!!
Reality is a very fluid thing with dementia... it comes and goes and it can be challenging to untangle it all LOL
Only in pj's hmm you never know what they might do ha ha. I was sent to help shower a 94 year old italian man, mind you i was quite new at the job and was still nervous about showering a man, anyways in my job if the client is able to wash themselves then they do it not us. The italian stallion as i used to call him proceeded to tell me one day after i refused to dry his bit and pieces told me that if he was 30 years younger something would have happened but it wont know as he is too old. I used ot forget on hot days not to wear a singlet as he used to always perv down my top, very funny old man he was.
Al..... you surprise me. Very witty but think you should have responded in the feeding bird thread. You may note that the name of this thread means that anything goes here as far as mental capacity
:')
I have far too much respect for your raptor knowledge AL to ever want to pick a fight with you
Lately the world has gone mad.... floods, fires, earthquakes and now just look at Japan...it is tragic!

Yes that is too true... and we have to keep that in mind when overwhelmed by such events I guess. today on my walk I saw the second family of catbirds that I am lucky enough to observe on a regular basis. The juvenile was very curious and didn't move when I came closer. As usual, when I get lucky with a close sighting .... I only had a mobile phone at hand.
I have a new baby in my garden area so that is at least two pairs that I know are breeding well . That makes me happy.
Thank goodness for translators on the internet! Birdie this idiot has had to translate german :)
I am getting a work out today! Guys I shouldn't have to say it again - no insults on the forum. Al that was totally unnecessary and consider yourself warned.
I know you all have enjoyed this thread (and I have been learning some german :)) but if it is just going to be used as a place to have a snipe at each other then I will delete it.
I don't know what is going on but it saddens me greatly to see so many members having a go at each other and hurting each other.
On the other hand, what do you think of the "Leica V-Lux 2"? Don't forget, I'm not an expert!!

Not all parts of the aged are easy to take Araminta, but if we can understand why things may happen , it helps.
