Juvenile Striated Heron

I spent the weekend at Wooli, NSW

a lifer for me was the (Black Bittern) juvenile Striated Heron (thanks Al)

not the best of photo but they are very camera shy

I had sightings on evening 1, evening 2 and morning 3 and saw 2 birds on morning 3

I have never seen one of these before, well done. Good ole Wooli, we used to surf around there about 30yrs ago and my Brother was that impressed he got Married out on the Headland at Boorkoom about five years ago and since purchased land at Wooli. I was only thinking the other day how good it would be to walk along the road up to Diggers Camp and get photos of every thing that moves, you have inspired me to do that now.

I found these in the mangroves just to the western side of the water tower and south to a break in the mangroves that was probably a boat ramp many years ago

about where Riverside Drive and Main St meet to become Wooli Rd

hope those directions help

Cool, I've never seen a Bittern of any description. Nice work.

Cheers,

Scott.

I remember reading that bitterns in Britain are sometimes called Franks because they make a noise that sounds like "FRANK".

no, unfortunately I did not hear them

I kept a good distance away so as not to put them to flight, I use a 100-400mm lens and had it at 400mm

Nice pic.  He has a look that is all his very own, hasn't he.  I don't know if I've seen any of these birds, as I wouldn't have known what they were.  Will keep my eye out for one now.

Looks like an immature Striated Heron to me,

pacman. Note the buff-white spots on wing.

The black bittern has a yellow band along the side of the neck.

Cheers,

I'm glad you could capture this image of this interesting bird with your longer lens. I haven't come across this bird yet ...

It has a look about it that it is sneaking through the water, not wanting to be seen. Great capture
