Exciting trip!

I was just looking at the details of the 2 week end of semester trip involved for one of my uni subjects this semester "Conservation in action".

I'm pretty excited because it's currently (subject to weather and accessibility) planning to take us to some awesome bird-watching locations like Bowra Station and Currawinya Lakes amongst others.

I definitely need to get a decent camera and some skills with it by then...

That sounds great Timmo, I hope somebody can give you a few hints, I have never been in that area before. Maybe you can borrow someone's camera for the trip. I'm looking forward to some interesting photos. Good luck !

Sounds awesome. If you can stretch the budget to a digital SLR, then do it, you won't regret it. I've seen some new from $650 lately.

My Canon D-SLR is currently off being repaired and I feel like I've lost my left arm at the moment! I'm using my second camera in line - an Olympus ultra-zoom. It's good, but can't approach the image quality of the Canon SLR. Start-up time and manual zooming also mean I can be taking a photo of that BOP flying overhead within a second or two, vs 5-10 for start up and electric zoom on the olympus.

Anyways, I won't go on, but let me know if you want more specific info.

Scott :)

Thanks Araminta,

I've used my folks Canon DSLR (EOS 500D, maybe?) a bit for bird photography before, so I could borrow that if necessary, but getting a camera for bird and plant photography has been on my mind for a while.

Yep, Scott, definitely planning to get a DSLR - probably one of the starter package type deals from Canon or Nikon with at least a 200mm zoom. Budget is flexible, but expecting to pay around $1000-1500 for the type of thing I'm thinking of.

Yes, I've had the same problems with startup time/shutter time on smaller point-n-shoot type cameras. I used to go to downhill mountain bike races a bit and trying to get shots of racers with my Canon Ixus was nearly impossible. If I pressed the button when I had the shot in frame, the rider was out of shot or half out in the photo.

Cheers
