Unknown species

Seen in the park at North Richmond.  Is this an Australian species or an escape?

I can't see your pic yet, was it a parrot? I saw some unusual parrots near there a while ago (a bit further out, near Ikea in Victoria St). I did a post back then thinking they were maybe Orange Bellied Parrots, but ScottTas and others ID'd them for me as Red Rumped Parrots. I'll try and put a picture on and see if it's working.

I'll trying inserting in the text instead.

Lovely colours in that bird.  I wonder how far their range is, as I haven't seen any here but there are a lot of ground feeding parrots out west.

Hi bill,

This is a Bell Miner (or commonly, bellbird), closely related to the more common Noisy Miner.

Very interesting siting Bill (now I can see it). So that's a Bellbird, I've never seen one. I didn't think they lived in the suburbs. I remember hearing them around Emerald and Belgrave but I've never seen them. Thanks for the post Bill, (and ID timmo).

Bellbirds were an integral part of Melbourne suburbs for me as a kid.

My grandma used to live in North Blackburn in a unit complex called Bellbird Grove. They had a little park at the end that always had bellbirds in it and I always found the little "tink, tink tink" such a lovely sound.

I also remember clearly hearing them out at the Dandenongs when we went out to Ferntree Gully to ride Puffing Billy.

From what I understand they are a little bit of a nuisance here in Brissie, as they are aggressive and colonies of them are moving into areas around western Brisbane like Brisbane Forest Park and pushing other birds out. This is anecdotal only though and not established fact.

Yep, we had them in Gembrook, thank god they are gone.

Thanks guys.  I overlooked the illustration in the Michael Morcombe field guide as it looks a bit more olive-coloured but having googled a few photos of Bell Miner, that's definitely the one.

Bill, the ones I have seen around here have been, as your guide suggests - much more drab and olive green than in your photos, so I guess there is a bit of variation in them.

This little bird has been hanging around under my lemon trees all morning. I can't identify it. Let's me get really close. Any one know what he/she is?

Looks like a White-bellied Cuckooshrike

It is always best to give the location of the sighting as this can help to make sure id can be accurate.

I'll second white-bellied cuckoo-shrike. For new ID requests, I would suggest making a new topic in future than adding onto another one
