HAVING A CHAT ABOUT MY VERANDA & THE BIRDS THAT GET THERE

Hi all

I just thought I might have a bit of a yarn about my veranda and the birds that entertain me every morning to start off there are five Kookaburras they are at the top of the pecking order and have to be fed first and given half a chance would take it all they are quite friendly but very greedy they often won’t let go of my finger.

Then there is the butcher Birds very quick they like to catch the food in mid-air they are too fast for th e Kookaburras.

The next on the list are Currawongs they stay down the other end of the veranda and I have to walk down that end and hand feed them their share there is only two at the moment the numbers vary don’t know why!.

There are three to four Magpies they are having trouble getting there share so require special attention so they don’t miss out.

Then last but not least comes the Australian native Mina bird I said the Kookaburras are at the top of the pecking order well given half a chance these fellows would take  right over just in numbers there must be dozens don’t worry about our overseas friends this is the real threat to Australia. “My humour” they are native and have their place I suppose. I just wish they weren’t so aggressive and noisy that takes care of the early am shift

The next lot in are King Parrots followed by the Rainbow Lorikeets now the fun begins. I wish I had a video camera the Rainbow Lorikeets will not tolerate any other bird on the veranda…… that is, King Parrots, Top Notch Pigeon, or a White dove that turned up from somewhere and is now a constant visitor he first started when the old bloke across the road fell of his perch so to speak I kid you not.

How what I do is put out three or four plates of fruit and small ground nuts and mixed grain the Lorikeets are so busy trying to keep all other birds away that lose the pecking order among  themselves, so it ends up a bit of mix up with them, and at this point the fighting starts  amongst themselves.

At this point the Dove and Top Notch will jump right into the food trough and grain goes very where, then the Lorikeets get back into them, when all settles down and the Lorikeets go, the King Parrots come back out of the large Sydney Red and clean up what is left, you may think that this is the end ! But Guest what turns up next a bl!!!!!!dy flock of White Cockatoos!

Out comes the water pistol and what do they do! Open their wings for a wash.

Just in closing off I have been doing this for more than 30yrs and a long time ago I use to get some scaly breasted parrots in but they disappeared about 15 to 20 years ago well the other day a pair come back I have taken a picture and will put it up when I work out how this done again.

Hope you enjoyed my chat Col
