The weather was really lousy today and I thought if I went west I might beat some of the rain. For once I was right. I saw Male & Female Golden Whistlers, Rufous Whistlers, Rose &Eastern Yellow Robins, Scrubwrens, Honeyeaters, Red-winged Parrot, Whipbirds, Finches etc. It turned in to a nice day. Here are some photos from today.

Shane - that was a good call to head west of Brisbane.
I was on the Redcliffe Peninsula and at Nerangba and the rain gauges should all have had some work.
The Pheasant Coucal is in non-breeding plumage.
I am sure that you will not mind if I add a breeding plumage adult pic taken at Goonellabah in Dec '10.

Thanks Owen, I was a bit concerned for the RWP as it was alone and was feeding with some Pale-headed Rosellas, plus it is the first time I have seen one so I am at least happy about that.

What a magnificent collection of shots, and birds I haven't seen around within the Brisbane area either. Where did you go?
What is the dark grey one in shot 3? A cuckoo of some sort?
I always thought the Pheasant Coucals were migratory like Koels or Channel Billed Cuckoos, but it seems not, having checked my books.
The Pheasant Coucal has been known in our family as the "whoop-whoop bird" for about 20 years since we first heard them in the bush near our place in Newcastle with their deep "ooop, ooop" call.

I have seen a Pheasant Coucal in flight a couple of times and it is not a pretty sight more gliding than flying. I got this, not fast enough, pic in Wollongbar, NSW in Feb '11

Great selection of shots Shane..... a great day out. I love the Pheasant Coucals , used to have them running around the bush around my last house ..... yes Timmo the whoop whoop bird lol .... they sounded like a pack of chimpanzees when they let rip to eachother up and down our valley!!

Thanks Tim, The bird in photo 3 is a Fan-tailed Cuckoo. All of these shots were taken at Hardings Paddock off the Ipswich-Boonah road. I have been going out there a bit lately because they are turning it into a Camp Ground and I think this will be detrimental to the variety of birds that I have seen here, so I am getting in while the going is good. Here is a photo taken from a previous trip of the Cuckoo, this time from the other side.

Peter when I was down Kyogle way in February this year, There was a magnificent specimen of the Coucal that I saw a couple of times on the edge of the road that I wanted to get a photo of, but where it showed itself was on a sharp blind bend so not easy to just stop and snap away, then when I went deliberately to go and get a photo the poor thing had become road kill.
