Kathie, I have a Barking Owl in the bush close to my house, sounds nothing like a Boobook! It does scream however, and I swear to who ever, it sounds like two Jack Russles sitting in a tree and barking.
Yes Akos, I am sure. The Barking Owl has moved a bit further down closer to Gembrook. There has been a report about some people hearing it at night. I'm certain it can only be the one I have heard for a few years behind us in the Bunyip State Park. I convinced the guy that wrote the article in the local paper not to tell more people about the Owl. I kept quiet for so long, I just don't want anyone to find it. I heard her again last night.
At the moment Owls are very active , I heard two a few minutes ago talking quietly to eachother. There was one during the night I hadn't heard before, it sounded like a BOP calling, a very loud and sharp po- wooau. Don't know how to describe it, a bit like an eagle.
I meant for Jackie. In Sydney they are not common at all and even my friend who is an owl research scientist has been fooled by his neighbour's Jack Russell once. :-)
I wasn't sure I'd ever heard one so went off to youtube to find clips (the bird finder isn't working here at the moment). And now I've heard them I'm thinking I probably have heard a barking owl before, and not even realised it. They do sound very much like a dog.
2.10am, I have just awoke to Barking Owl calls, 5 in a row loud, (about 30-45 sec intervals) then 1 more not so loud, then nothing. I have also heard screaming noises from approx 14m high up in the last few weeks. (different to Fox noises) Location was my home in Tecoma, on the edge of Sherbrooke Forest which is heavily treed. A powerful owl has just started to call as well, heard on two occasions approx 11pm. in the last week. What a beautiful sound
Dunno about Barking Owls in the Blue Mountains; I thought they were more common in open bush and plains rather than the denser stuff in the Blue Mountains, and even sparse-uncommon there. If you're just looking to see one, there's been one seen occaisonally at Narrabeen Lake in Sydney over the last year or so. The most recent report for a Barking Owl on Eremaea was in the Capertee Valley- you could stretch Blue Mountains to include Wollemi.
I have heard about one somewhere near Dubbo that is well know to birders, but I don't know about how accessible it is what its exact location is. You'd have to track someone down...
You'd likely have to spend a fair bit of time there unless you got really lucky though- the reports for the Capertee Region are rather sporadic. Glen Davis is a bit of a pain to get to too, as it is further out of the way than its couterpart in the Wolgan Valley.
I'm not sure I've heard one. I'll have to go look up the sound to listen to it. I know we get a Southern Boobook here from time to time.

I agree Araminta, they do sound like Jack Russles.
Are you sure? That is very exciting!

That's wonderful Di. I didn't know what they sounded like so when to have a listen and I've heard these at home too sometimes. Never seen them though.
We do get the Southern Boobook Owl and have heard it often and seen it occasionally in one of our gum trees at night.

Does anybody know of the closest and most recent record of a Barking Owl in the Blue Mountains? And also their numbers here (obviously very low)?
It's the only owl I have never seen nor heard here.

Thanks Lachlan I'll see if I can chase it up. Capertee Valley sounds good and I've always wanted to go there...

Yes, too true but I do know someone who has a place in Glen Davis. That'd make things ever so slightly easier.
