nocturnal bird call

Is there a bird with a call similar to a Nankeen Night Heron? It does not sound like a crake or rail.Have not been able to record it, yet, the bird call is rather short and infrequent and comes from the forest near the creek.

Ah, Christina, it's always difficult dealing with bird calls here. A peep! peep! or gronk! gronk! might be helpful. I take it from your question that you're familiar with the Nankeen Night Heron call & that this call you hear is similar but not the same.

I find it very difficult to describe most bird calls. Will try to record any that I cannot identify. We do have the set of CDs on Australian bird calls, but there are local 'dialects' as well, which make it more difficult.

Could it be a Peacock?

No peacock, the call is just 1 or 2 short shrieks.

I often use my "smart" phone to record a video clip or audio of stuff I want to listen to later. That's how I recorded this below clip of a Sooty Owl.

If you could try to record with your phone, you may be surprised that it works. Of course, it does depend on the phone, ambient sounds around at the time etc....

I don't have a smart phone, but can record sound with my camera. I'll have it ready for the next weird call.
