Bird Baths

I was wondering why the water in the bird bath was disapearing so quickly. I found out why yesterday

Great shots Matt - I love how each bird species has a different way of bathing. The little guys are usually fearless and will dive straight in - whereas apparently Wedge-tailed eagles won't bath in anything deeper than 20cm - and that is a quick splash.

Is that a satin BB Matt?  How lovely to have it use your bird bath. Since moving into a more subrban area I havent seen one bird use either of the bird baths, but you have reminded me to refill them anyway :)  I do have a cat so in a way i am glad that they are not coming down to them. I might try putting one in the front yard as she cant go there

With the latest spell of dry weather on the sunshine coast I am finding my birdbaths being used much more. Its great to watch the birds drinking and bathing; they seem to enjoy it so much its a pleasure to keep up the water supply.

Yes I have been thinking the same way night parrot as all the little drains and stuff are dryhing up around the suburbs now. I can see the wetland area where I have been going lately receding with every day!!

Just had to share this here . I took this shot at my friends place in the hills outside of Brisbane ... it was during the Olympics and I think he was trying for the backstroke  cheeky

Yes Alison, actually I have noticed a heap of birds locally doing similar stuff lately , today I was watching Brown Honey eaters in a pond and they were totally going under as well. I think the dry spell is getting to them and maybe they have parasites or something?

Well Adrienne, whatever else they have, they certainly have wet heads - very interesting observation!

Found two new visitors to the other bird bath today (Striated Thornbill & Grey Fantail)

And yes sorry the first two are satin bower birds and the last is a currawong
