A spotless crake has moved into my garden. What do they eat and should I look at relocating. I have 5 ponds, frog, kio and goldfish??

Hi ingedavis, awesome that you have a Spotless Crake in your garden. What do you mean by "relocating"? Are you refering to the bird?

I found this info on a PDF from a QL gov website: They eat :

Diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits, shoots, insects, molluscs, crustaceans, spiders and carrion

(I tried to put the link in but didn't work)

Sounds like you have created the perfect environment for him.

Cheers, Jackie

I'm curious about that too, why would you want to " relocate"? Aren't we all dreaming of having a Spotless Crake in our garden?

By relocate I meant take back to natural water source as I want it to remain happy and healthy. If it can get what it needs in my yard then it can stay along with my many other feathered Freinds.

For a minute there I thought you were worried about your fishlaugh

I would think that the Crake is in your garden because there are food sources there for it to eat. Maybe just make sure that cats and dogs don't get to himsmiley

Cheers, Jackie

Lucky you, ingedavis. I reckon that if it's in your garden it's finding what it needs. If your garden no longer has what it needs it'll move on. Whatever you do, please avoid artificially feeding it as it's healthier if it feeds independently.

Well one more addition it is then. Fish are safe designed ponds 600+ deep to avoid such worries. Do you think they'll eat tadpoles as natural reduction would be welcome.

What is this all about? Do you breed those fish commercialy? If that is what you are worried about, loosing a few  fish? Put a net over your pond. I'm more worried now that some rare native birds are going to drown in your 600+ what? ponds. ( hate to start a fight, but hate to tell you, I don't care much about Gold Fish)

No fight, would have preferred that you read and understood the comments that preceded your last. I have acre's of land that I have rehabilitated to provide food and shelter for birds and animals. Sorry if I forgot the millimetre abbreviation. I was informed by decs and land care that ponds deeper than 600mm discourage wading birds as they will not traverse these depths for food. I have incorporated a large frog pond with frogs and native perch to provide water as my birdbaths tend to empty to quickly. First time I used this website today as I thought it would be good to discuss and share the beauty in my garden. My mistake. Thank you to the members who where kind enough to assist in my questions.

Inge I had never heard of a Spotless Crake until I saw your post and I am wondering if I have one too. Our kitchen sink outflow goes into the scrub and I think the bird hangs around the "estuary" to eat seeds, rice grains, etc that escape down the drain.  I only see it for a split second before it disappears into the grass and so initially I thought it was a bandicoot. But its definitely a bird. I have seen a banded rail around but this seems to be a darker greyish colour. Whatever it is, its very shy - and fast!

Looks like artificial feeding isn't your thing, inge. I support that. I'd like to hear more about what you're doing on your property.
