What a voice !

The sound produced by this New Holland Honeyeater  was unbelievably loud, so I had to go outside to find him. He was sitting on the highest branch of a shrub and just calling. Have a look at him, you can just about hear him?

Great shot of its tongue, Araminta. New Holland honeyeaters have a brush tip to their tongue which makes it more efficient for them when gleaning nectar from flowers but I don't see any brush on this one's tongue. I'm wondering if the brush folds up when it's in non-feeding mode.

O my ...., Woko, he has lost his brush?? I have looked at all my photos, no brush. I googled, looked and searched, none of the photos was close enough to see any brush. (most photos not as close as minewink)

Like you, I'm most interested now, does anyone have a photo of a brush tongue? Please post here.

Thanks al for making the effort to find those photos, that is fantastic. Here now is the next question: can they fold the brush, retract, or how does it work? Any idea?

M-L, the photo of the White-eared Honeyeater was taken by me on my property.

In answer to your question, honeyeaters have a long, protactile, brush-tipped tongue curled at the sides to form a tube for extracting nectar from flowers.

My Simpson & Day has drawings of it.

As you can see in my next photo the honeyeater's tongue is a little extented but not spread out.

I'm sure your beautiful NHH hasn't lost his brush wink just folded as you and Woko suggested.

Cheers,

al

Thanks so much al for giving such  detailed information, very much appreciated. What a lovely photo, what's the bird sitting on? Looks like a rock pool?

It's a bird bath I carved out of a large rock.
