I find it amazing how much food is in those local lakes. This one is in the town centre of Berwick (Vic). You can also see how small the little coot is next to the Yabby claws.

Yes, I guess if there wasn't food in those lakes the birds wouldn't be there.
Wow Woko, great observation, do Coots eat prawns? Went to my lake today, there are lots of eel in there, someone must have put them there? Or do they fly in?

Araminta, that would be an interesting project: find out what natural & unnatural food exists in local lakes & find out what the local wildlife are eating. It's amazing the rubbish people put in our waterways: carp, trout, eels, bread, shopping trollies...the list goes on.
Any prawns eaten by Coots would probably be raw prawns. And a flying eel would be sight to see but, like you, I suspect someone put them in the lake, probably from a no-longer-wanted eel tank.
