It was a beautiful day at the Treatment Plant yesterday. We went there to find some waders. Yes, lots of them, in the faaaar distance. Far too far to get good photos. Here is one half decent photo of Red-necked Avocets. (I hope that's what they are?)
And a Great Crested Grebe, that looked as if it had just come back from the watching the Melbourne Cup, wearing a fancy hat.
Hmmm, we missed oneanother again.... I was at the WTP yesterday trying for some wader shots, too. Yours are way better than anything that I got. Well done.
Cheers,

This photo is not very good, but did you see those George? There were hundred of them when you come in at Gate4, on the left side, where those rocks and island are. Are they Sandpipers? What kind? Are these the ones that make that one note high whistle?
M-L
G'day M-L, I reckon the larger ones with the rufous wings are Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, the large, mainly grey, birds with down-curved beaks are Curlew Sandpipers and the rest look like Red-necked Stints. I copied your shot and added a couple of labels. Hope you don't mind.

They are great shots M-L. Where is the treatment plant? You know so many places I don't know about.

Thanks George, I will try to remember.
Kathie, it's best to google www.melbournewater.com.au Sewerage:Western Treatment Plant. You can download a form : Bird Watching Permit, pay and they will send you a key and instructions. Trust all the people that go there, it's paradise .
M-L
But where is it exactly? I'll go visit the site too. Ok, so you need a permit.

It's a very large area. You go down the Princes Freeway, over the WG Bridge, past the Werribee Zoo and turn off at Point Wilson RD. Only permit holders can get in, you'll get a map and key, and all the info.
M-L
A new place to visit! When I can spare more than an hour or two too. Sounds like I can't go on the spur of the moment too, if I have to notify them in advance. How much notice do you have to give them? And I understand the reasons why.

It's one of these places , you go once and you are hooked. You'll want to stay all day and never come home. Take your husband, to carry your gear
M-L
Yep, already planning that - taking the man I mean
