Hello all, Every day in early hours of the morning and as late as 7.30am we hear a distinctive hooting, it sounds exactly (well to me anyway) like a Powerful Owl but isn't just two hoots, it is a series of 7-10. It isn't that close and we don;t see it, any guesses to what to may be? It's bird symphony here (Ryde): cuckatoos, channel billed cuckoos, native minor, magpies, Kookaburra, crows, masked lapwings....just to name a few. But what is the hooting?
I have noticed that some of the native pigeons maybe the Wonga and the White headed pigeons Hoot

I am so waiting what people will come up with? I have heard that sound so often, I have gone out in the dark, and not found the bird, it does sound like an Owl, it is a quiet , soft sound, it sound as if the bird is making the sound while breathing out? I listened to recordings people have made of Owls, but I don't think it is an Owl. It starts when it is still dark, and only ends when all the other birds wake up. It's a one note soft hoot, that keeps on going for some time, always the same note. Can't wait! Could you record it? I don't have a mobile or that kind of thing.

wow thank you so much! Sounds very similar to the white headed pigeon, the sound we hear is more regular but might be it. will try and get a recording. Thank you, it's had us so curious :)
Mystery solved! We saw it in the act of hooting. It's the Crested Pigeon :)
I can't say I've heard a crested pigeon calling at night. It'd be a hoot if it did, I must say!
Hello everyone. I also have been curious. I hear the same sound early morning but also at various times during the day. Searching out my terrace trying to find or see the bird i never did find it. Nobody seems to know what kind of bird it is. I also taught it was a owl. So i went through various bird sounds & calling. It is a mourning dove. Look up the video they are so cute. Well that's the sound i was hearing. Hope this helped.
I’d never heard of a Mourning Dove so I checked Wikipedia & found that it’s a North American bird. So, Pixievette, I assume that’s where you heard the bird. I also learned that it’s one of America’s most prolific breeders & is hunted for sport & game. I trust that it doesn’t go the way of the Passenger Pigeon.
