This guy was enjoying the cooler weather this morning by having a drink.Last year I had so many of them, that I got bored by looking at them, this year there are only two, so suddenly they have become special

Thanks Nahar, I'm just good at sneaking up on animals of any kind by trying to think as they would. I pretend to be a tree
, and only move when they can't see me, or have their backs to me. I also relax as much as I can and don't breathe, that reduces the camera shake. Today it's very difficult to sneak up on anything, the grass is so dry it crunches under my feet. For these photos I had to move further back again, I was too close, the camera didn't focus.

When we moved to our new house it appeared that the next-door neighbours have a bore-water pump. The thing would run for 20 minutes and then stop for a few minutes before starting again. It was obviously faulty and made a monotonous, slow "Oom! Oom! Oom!" noise which was driving me mad.
Determined to take a large hammer to it, I leaned over the fence to try and locate the pump. I then realised that the noise was coming from BEHIND me and ABOVE! It took a while before I spotted a silhouette of a pigeon which was nodding in time to each "Oom!" I had found the Common Bronzewing Pigeon responsible for weeks of aural misery!
Interestingly, while I thought the noise was coming from a mechanical pump it drove me nuts - yet since I have found it is a bird I actually enjoy the sound and look forward to hearing it! Funny how the mind works!

That is an interesting thought, rolyd. I've had the same experience of not liking something, often a noise, that's associated with human activities but once it's associated with nature it's quite OK. I've put it down to a question of values but would be interested in any thoughts you might have on the matter.
Hmmm, to the question of "value", there is a certain amount of "arrogance" involved I think.? Take the fact that I think to play my classical music very loud, is fine, after all it's cultural. But if my neighbour plays "tuff tuff" music very loud, it's not?
I call that "judgemental" and "arrogant" on my part. Still hard to overcome , and I'm working on myself to not do it.

What I meant by a question of values is that if I hear a noise that I associate with a bird I might like that noise if I place a higher value on birds than on, say, a human activity. However, if I associate the same noise with a human activity I might not like it because I place a higher value on birds than on the human activity. The same could apply in reverse for someone who places a higher value on the human activity than on birds. I'm using the word "value" strictly in a neutral sense (I hope).
