First flight of the wrens

I can’t tell you how privileged I feel. I watched the three Superb Fairy Wren fledglings come out of the nest. I was so lucky, because they were only briefly out in the open, now they are well hidden in the dense grass. Sorry, I can’t make up my mind which photos to post, hope you enjoy the ones I have chosen?

They are all excellent shots so I am glad you shared them all.  What lens and camera were you using?

I use a SONY SLT-A77V camera

For the photos inside the nest, I used a

SONY DT 18-55mm lens F 3.5-5.6 SAM

Shutter speed 1/320, ISO 1600

For the ones outside the nest

A SONY 70-400mm F4.0-5.6 G lens

Shutter speed 1/320 ISO 1600 focal length was 300mm taken from about 2.5 m distance (hand held)

I didn’t work on them, only cropped a tiny bit on either side, because the grass was too blurry.

Thanks for the nice comment.

You are very lucky (although you clearly work at it.  Ha ha it's like something people used to say at my cricket team "the harder I work, the luckier I get!)

Sadly I will be away when my babies fledge (probably in the next few days).  I watched daddy and mummy feeding them constantly over the past few days.

I even approached the nest, and just to get a better look I moved some twigs from very close to the entance of the nest.  ... Has anyone ever heard a baby wren's distress call?  It is amazingly loud.  It certainly made me jump!  I was very tempted to do it again and record it for you all (all in the name of research of course) but I decided I would leave them alone.

After the previous disasters it must be so gratifying to see these 3 survivors surviving, Araminta. Nice to see 3 more native birds.

Thanks everyone. Yes soakes, I have heard them call for help, if you can call it that. I’m also a little worried about them begging very loudly, now that they are out of the nest. Although they are hiding in the grass, the 7 f…..g cats next door must hear them. The young would be an easy meal. (After we trapped 2 more cats and handed then over to the ranger, she got some new ones. Nice, isn’t it? She has a cat run, but hardly ever uses it) Why can’t people control their animals?
