Is this a mutant Rosella

Hi, I photographed this black coloured rosella in our back yard yesterday, is this a mutant? The normal visitors are yellow & green, never seen a crimson one town. All help much appreciated. TIA

Wow, that's really interesting David. What area are you in?

The only Rosella I am aware of that is even remotely that colour is the Northern Rosella (local to Darwin, the top of NT and NE tip of WA).

I do know that some juveniles are a different colour for some time (e.g. juvenile Crimson Rosellas are green rather than blue) and Rosellas also interbreed, as I have seen pictures of crosses of Pale-headeds witrh Crimsons, as well as Easterns with Crimsons.

Hi Tim, Riverina as I say yellow and green are the normal visitors, also the dominant vatiety in town the crimson one tends to stay out of town. The photo is from a video which I've yet to finish editing will aim to get it up tonight which might help with ID. I've spent hours searching the web and can not find anything like it closest is a reference to a mutant red.

Thanks Al, so yes it is, (amazing how fickle search wording can be) now I just have to work out the parents colour, hope it stays around long enough to get to know it better it's a beautiful little bird. ad

Thanks Holly, It's very special to have a bird like this appear in your backyard. When my wife said to me she saw a black rosella in th e yard my reaction was there is no such thing as a black rosella. When I finally saw it I could not believe my eyes!!  And could not wait to capture some type of image to prove what we were seeing was real and try to identify it. It has made three appearences that we have seen and be able to capture so far...hope it stays around for a while yet so I can get some decent photos and video as a record. ad
