Powerful Owl - Faulconbridge Blue Mountains

Hi all, this morning around 5.45am just before it got too light up our way i was on my back deck & heard what i believe to be an owl down in the gully behind our house. We often get owls late at night but this one had a different sound. I have used the sound ID on this site & i would swear it was the powerful owl sound as it sounds almost identical. I live on the south side of Faulconbridge & it was down in Sassafras Gully looking up towards Eurama Castle area.

A couple of times at night we have had an experience with a very large bird (at times we thought it was a massive bat) until it snatched a baby possum off our back roof & swooshed down over my husbands head & he believed it was a large owl.

Any locals to our area had any experiences with Powerful Owls around Faulconbridge / Springwood. Being an absolute beginner, I am hoping i am correct with the ID.

Thanks Donna

Congratulations on your sighting and also your ability to rise at 5.45am. Or were you just going to bed?

And thanks for the detail, Donna. It always helps to identify birds if there's information about location, habitat, behaviour & time of day (or night).

Hi Mountainmaid (and welcome!) Yes there are absolutely Powerful Owls in your area! Whilst the Birds in Backyards Powerful Owl project focusses on the more urban PO's around Sydney, we have certainly had sightings from the Blue Mountains.

Hi, I'm from the Blue Mountains too and my brother recently sighted a Powerful Owl (in the middle of the afternoon) at North Katoomba! Very exciting!

Seeing an owl during the day is certainly a powerful experience, Owl of Kedumba. Your brother would have been jumping out if his skin, I imagine.

Lucky folks - I have heard them around out behind Mt Coot-tha in Brissie, and to my mind they sound like the classic owl sound, or in fact, more like a person pretending to be an owl.

I thought it was kids mucking around at first, but it was too persistent, and matched to the call samples I have found.

Cheers
