Haven't been there many times and usually for the surfing, but I did got to a place past Wauchope, pronounced "warhope" if you didn't know already called Ellenborough Falls and even though this was a long time ago I remember it was a beautiful place and the falls had an amazing drop and it was quite deserted, I remember that the forest looked good, now it probably has a Maccas on the edge of the falls. But looking at a map of the area there are a lot of state forests and some national parks to explore, there is a lake to the south I think it is called Lake Cathie which could be interesting and around Laurieton and Cambden Head could be productive. Sorry can't give you anything positive because it certainly saves time knowing where to go first.
Hi Pacman..... what a lovely area to have a temp assignment in . Clif2 ....fortunately you are wrong about the Maccas...the town is still relatively small and the area you are talking about is still very beautiful. It is a wonderful part of the world to explore though I didn't get to do any specific birding when I was there. I have a friend who was living in the Beechwood area on property and there were plenty of birds to see.
Good luck and sorry I can't recommend anywhere specific but there are rivers etc ...should be good for forest and seabirds :)
update, now into week 6 of my 6 month assignment in Port Macquarie
I have been away from the area each weekend, either to the Northern Rivers, NSW or the Redcliffe Peninsula, Qld - yes, it is a hard life but someone has to do it!!
only 1 lifer so far - Eastern Shrike-tit (not a good photo but sufficient to identify the bird)
found in Kooloonburg Creek Nature Reserve
and then yesterday afternoon I found a juvenile Common Koel being fed by the adoptive partents, Little Wattlebirds
found at Settlement Point
I went back today to try for a better photo
from now on I will be here every 2nd weekend so i hope to get out & about more
Don't know how I missed this post. Must have been when I was in hospital. Glad you could ID the first one. I see lots of koels but have not been able to get a decent pic of one yet. I do have one I took a long time ago with my old camera, but have filed it in a safe place where no one can find it, not even me :(
I also live in the Port Macquarie area, & can I suggest if any birdwatchers are around the region or going through Lake Cathie....you would probably enjoy visiting Lake Innes.
Lake Innes is only accessable via Lake Cathie & only by canoe or small tinny (as far as I know, look on google earth), the area was reminiscent to me of Kakadu(photos that ive seen only), I am not an avid birdwatcher (just enjoy seeing them in their natural environment), & can remember seeing many different types of birds when I went there.
Just as an aside on maccas....drove from Port Macquarie to Darwin the other week & fortuneatly only spotted 1 maccas (it wasnt at Ellenborough Falls :) ), think it was at Moree or Mt Isa(didnt stop), anyway which was great because that made me stop at some lovely local cafe's.
I'm not familiar with the area, but it will be interesting to see the bird life there. Have fun.
