Thanks for the movie, aussiedavid. Those rainbow lorikeets are spectacular, especially when they're seen so close.
However, while the lorikeets are great at putting on a colourful show for us they're not playing their roles in the environment: those of pollinators of flowers, dispersers of seed & controllers of insect numbers. The natural environment suffers as a result.
It always concerned me that staff at Warrawong Sanctuary near Mylor in the Mt Lofty Ranges put out sugared water & non-native seeds to attract birds for the entertainment &, perhaps, education of visitors. And attract birds it did. Hundreds of native birds would congregate to partake of the easy bounty. And hundreds of visitors would be entertained &, perhaps, educated. However, the surrounding bushland was rather depleted of the pollinators, seed dispersers and insect controllers on which it depends for its regeneration & health.
It would be great to see a movie of rainbow lorikeets feeding on Eucalyptus flowers or eating native seeds, insects or larvae. Birds doing it naturally are wonderful to behold.

Agree with you 100% on the exploitation of native birds.
An accommodation establishment in Mt Dandenong had a major problem develop when they started feeding birds for the entertainment of visitors, got out of hand big time.
Native conditions would be great but they are not native to this area as you already know. The population could be as low as the birds that visit us. We have only seen them in the last 12 moths and reports from the bird community down this way say ‘a few’ have been seen in the last 2 years.
Why they are out this far is an unknown, escaped pets, loss of habitat due to urban sprawl...?
Down the track I will acquire the experience, gear and time to do some ‘au natural’ stuff but for the moment practice with the available subjects is the best I can hope for. ad

Yes, I knew about AWOL, Araminta. My father was charged with that during WWII. He wore it as a badge of honour so he came out of the war a decorated hero.
