I was a believer that every single coloured one was a pigeon and only the pure white were doves. since getting into birds more I have learned that the smaller ones are classed as doves while larger species are classed as pigeons, which doesn't make any sence to me since you can have two different birds in the same size range and simular colour and be called a different name. Also as Shorty mentioned you can have one bird that goes by many different names... I guess regarldess if it's called this or that they are all still a member of the big Columbidae family
I was told the two words mean the same thing ,pigeon being French and dove being German ,but now days I think we tend to call the big ones Pigeons and the small ones doves.
The Pigeon sh*ts all over buildings, statues and park benches and generally annoy some people.
The Dove however brings happiness to people like releasing Doves at special occasions.
I think it is just what people have decided to call them and depends on where in the world you are.
The Rock Dove is also called Common Pigeon and Rock Pigeon so take your pick.
