Hi everyone new to the fourms here:).We live in far north queensland australia and while out in the garden we came across this good loookin fellow and was wondering if you could help us identify it. He was certainly a insect eater and swooped in to grab them at quite a fast pace. His underside is all black. I do apologise for the bad photo i didnt have much time to get a shot of him. My dad said that he thinks he'd seem them here more than 20 years ago and that someone told him it was a "blue hooded jade/coal" but we cant seem to find anything like him.His length would be about 20cm, about the length of a butcher bird, Thanks guys
Spangled Drongo maybe, kinda hard to tell.
mmm, well we did look at the Spangled Drongo but it's got red eyes, shorter beak and the tail feathers look quite different too.
What about a spangled drongo?
Cheers Beef.
The down turned beak i would favour the drongo over another bird as in the trumpet manucode.
Also the juvenile drongo has a brown eye.
Cheers Beef.
Hi, Beef. Thanks that makes some sence, so do you know weather the drongo has the long outcurved tail feathers when it's a juvenile. Thanks Beef, Joel
pic of juvenile Spangled Drongo follows - brown eyes, fish tail
looks to be your bird
Peter
