Golden Chestnut Teal

Early this morning I went to check on my local lake. (some will remember that I make sure it gets looked after and cleaned by Melbourne Water regularly.) It was spotlessly cleanyes.

I spotted a pair of Chestnut Teals. He looked so different, almost golden, there was hardly any green visible on his head, but there was no sunshine that could have caused a reflection. The female accompanying him looked just as they always do.

Any explanation as to why he looked so different? Do they change during the breeding season?

one more, in this photo you can see some shades of green, but the back of his head still looks very golden. Any ideas why??

Unusual M-L,maybe it was a trick of the light? It looks like an overcast day in the photos.

Yes Nathan, you are right , it was somewhat overcast. But look at his girl friend, she looks normal.

I still wonder if they change colours , put on the gold to impress the girls?

Even swimming past me the other way, he still looks gowing in gold paintcheeky
