Every time I go over to my mums I comment on her beautiful garden and all the birds she gets, yesterday I also asked her to let me know next time she sees any superb fairy-wrens so I can dash over as I am only 1-2 mins drive. Well they visited her today and I wasn't home until after dark
Mum thought she would quickly run and grab her camera to take a few photo's for me and well lets say I am very proud of her first attempt at photographing birds and a tad jealous at the same time
That's a great story and wonderfull pics your mum took, she might get hooked

Come on, you should know better than to drive your parents to addictive habits!
I really hope she gets hooked, I gave her my nikon coolpix to take pictures or her horses so hopefully this is the start of somthing new for her.. I asked how close she was and said he was about two or three metre away, much closer than I have ever got to one haha.
great pics, he looks to be in full breeding plumage, I wonder how long he has been like that?

I'm not to sure Pacman. I do know I saw some superbs in breeding plumage a week and a half ago on one of my walks, it confused me as I thought they breed from spring which isn't until September so it seems a bit early to be in full colour right? I thought maybe they are seniors like M-L has mentioned but I also was red-backed and varigated in colour also :/
Well done mum
I still haven't seen any in breeding plumage in my garden But in SEQ it is much warmer than down here in Vic. We even had some frost the last two nights. There is a lot of fighting going on amongst the boys, they must be establishing the ranking? I just had a look at some photos I took last year, they were in breeding colours much earlier. They must know something we don't, might get colder again?

Well done Cassie's mum from me as well. We have had at least two males stay in breeding plumage this year (also SE Qld), although there are several which have changed. So presumably we have some of the older ones as well as the younger ones? Anyway, the last couple of days we have had one male attacking his reflection in the passenger side rear vision mirror on two different cars in our parking area - I think the passenger side as it is closest to the bushes the birdslike. Really funny to watch. A fella's gotta have someone to pick on - right? Chris.
That's the start of the breeding season, they are trying to get ridd of that "good looking rival" in the mirror.
They do that at my place at the start of every season, the car mirrors and my windows are attacked non stop. Hate to say it, everything gets crapped on too

I would love to see some wrens at my place, in breeding plumage or not! They were here last year but they haven't come back! hope to see some soon. In the mean time, I can just enjoy all of you guys's great photos
